November 5th to 20th, 2016.
Join us for the opening reception on November 5th, 6:00 - 9:00 PM
Presented by Quotidian. Curated by Jill Moniz.
Quotidian is pleased to present an exhibition featuring the works of Mae Alice Engron at Sixty29 Contemporary. This is Mae's first show in Los Angeles since her inclusion in the extraordinary exhibition The But for the Grace: A Tribute to Pathfinders and Visionaries held at The Gallery Tanner in 1991. Mae passed away in 2007, but thanks to a supportive collector, left a treasure trove of works that are featured in this exhibition.
Mae was first and foremost a colorist. The hues and tones she created from layers of pigments are incredibly rich and sophisticated. She had a tremendous awareness of her practice, of the depth and breadth of color and the freedom it gave her to express a range of emptions.
She was a black woman artist working in abstraction alone in the middle of the country and virtually without peers. Her robust and complex compositions have a unique language where color is her vocabulary, and she expertly explored the versatility of her syntax.
Otis College of Art and Design art professor Holly Tempo will give a presentation of Engron's works on November 19th at 4:00 PM. Accompanying this exhibition is the "No Date, No Title" catalog offering a look into Mae Engron’s life and practice, as well as her historical work with oil on foil.
This exhibition will be open daily: Tuesday to Sunday 12:00 - 6:00 PM
